History & First Impressions
The Egyptian Theatre, located in DeKalb, Illinois, was one of many Egyptian style theatres built in the early 20th century. Built in 1928, the theatre hosted movies and live events and was a bustling cultural landmark. By the 1970s, the theatre was closed due to its deteriorating condition and turned over to the city of DeKalb. Fortunately, a nonprofit swooped in to save the historic building and has kept it running ever since.
Upon arriving at the theatre, you immediately notice the elaborate details of the building. The building boasts authentic hieroglyphics, Egyptian symbols, and intricate designs throughout. When entering through the theatre doors, guests are welcomed by lofty ceilings, mosaic tile floors, decadent light fixtures, and a stained glass window with an ancient scarab design. When you enter the auditorium, you notice the breathtaking “sky” adorned with twinkling stars. Now being one of only six remaining Egyptian-style theatres, the theatre not only holds architectural significance, but also is known to house several spirits who have yet to leave the spotlight.
Claimed Activity
Known to walk the balcony and watch shows from afar, the Lady in Green is often seen and heard by visitors and performers alike. Based on what staff and investigators have gathered, she was likely an actress who loved the Egyptian Theatre so much that she decided to spend her eternal afterlife there.
In the main seating and stage area, several spirits are frequently encountered. Irv Kummerfeldt, a man who played a pivotal role in the theatre's revival, tragically suffered a heart attack while watching one of the performances. He is often spotted walking the aisles or by the aisle doors, believed to be diligent in his duties, making sure that everything is in order and continuing to watch over the theatre. There is also the spirit of a janitor that has presented himself as an apparition on several occasions. He is typically seen and sensed on the stage area with a broom or mop in his hand, sometimes staring intently at those who witness him. There are also reports of items being mysteriously misplaced occasionally on stage.
The dressing room, said to be one of the most active places in the building, houses the spirit of a young woman who is often heard crying in the bathroom. Her sobs can be loudly heard at times, leaving many to wonder what story she left behind within these walls.
Investigation & Experiences
TIP arrived ready to communicate and encounter the spirits who remain within the theatre. A faint whisper and disembodied laughter were heard in the balcony, and a heavy presence was felt by multiple team members. Several investigators also witnessed a shadow-like figure roaming the main aisles and walking past the aisle doors. There was a surge of activity in the dressing room bathroom, where REM pods were used to communicate and were constantly triggered, sometimes without a break. Dowsing rods were used to communicate and elicited compelling responses when questions were directed to certain known entities. There were many bangs and noises that were heard throughout - some explained away by further testing and investigation, and others left unsolved. Overall, the team enjoyed investigating the Egyptian Theatre and left with a respect and understanding for those spirits who choose to call the theatre their home.
